What you will get from this book:

  • 25 evidence-based learning activities to engage students cognitively
  • Easy-to-adopt lesson plans for each learning activity for teachers

There are 25 lesson plans that outline the steps involved in planning a specific activity. I have personally used many of the techniques described in this book.

The techniques included in this book have been proven effective for learning. I primarily referred to John Hattie's extensive work on Visible Learning®, which incorporates data from over 60,000 studies and 300 million students. This study is one of the most comprehensive investigations on education ever conducted, examining over 250 educational "influences" and their impact on student achievement.

The book is divided into three parts.

Part 1 serves as an introduction to the fundamental concepts of thinking and cognitive engagement in an active learning environment. While this chapter is not exhaustive, it is recommended to read it first to familiarise yourself with commonly used terminology.

Part 2 provides detailed explanations of the techniques used in this book. Each chapter can be read independently. Each technique described in the book is accompanied by a step-by-step lesson plan that teachers can use and modify for their students.

Due to my background, many of my examples are suitable for students in higher secondary or university. However, primary school teachers should be able to adapt the techniques appropriately for their students.

Part 3 offers a brain teaser, which is often overlooked as a valuable tool for student engagement in the classroom.
